Gateway 2000 supports Intercast Technology

New technology brings Gateway 2000 customers
an interactive way to enjoy the Internet & TV

NORTH SIOUX CITY, S.D., April 2, 1997 - Gateway 2000, Inc., today announced support for Intel’s Intercast™ technology that brings television programming and related web content together on the personal computer. Gateway 2000 joined Intel and MTV: Music Television in launching Intercast technology in joint events in Las Vegas, Nevada and New York City. Gateway 2000 plans to offer an optional tuner card with Intercast technology available on several models of its desktop computers. Shipments are expected to begin April 28, 1997.

"Gateway 2000 is happy to support Intel’s initiative and be among the first manufacturer to offer Intercast technology systems," said Dave Berger, director of product marketing-Americas for Gateway 2000. "This is another step in our continuing effort for innovation and value in the products we offer our customers."

An Intercast technology ready PC includes an Intel PC with multimedia sound system, a TV tuner with Intercast application support when supplied with a broadcast signal including Intercast information in the vertical blanking interval. Gateway 2000 will offer an Intercast enabled TV/FM tuner card upgrade for $129.00.

"Intercast is a cool technology combining the interactivity of the computer, the worldwide information resources of the Internet and television programming," said Berger. "With the flexibility of our build-to-order business model we can add TV reception and Intercast technology to a number of different desktop systems, as needed.

Using Intercast technology, properly configured PC systems will be able to receive and interact with unique content created around existing TV programming. Intercast technology enhances both by adding interactive digital information to television, and full motion video and a familiar context to the Internet. Intercast content is received in the same way television viewers receive signals now--whether through a conventional TV antenna, cable or satellite dish. Intercast content is broadcast as part of the usual television signal in the vertical blanking interval. Several television networks currently provide this type of programming, and users can contact their local broadcasters, cable provider or satellite program provider to see if Intercast programming is available in their area.

"We’re happy Gateway 2000 is joining us to offer Intercast technology to their customers," said Ron Whittier, Senior Vice President, Intel Content Group. "The availability of Intercast technology from one of the largest direct marketers of PCs is a major step forward for this technology."

Gateway 2000 is a member of the steering committee of the Intercast Industry Group, which promotes the Intercast medium and the creation of diverse, interactive content for the medium by bringing together the entertainment and computer industries. Members include leading computer manufacturers, computer hardware and software vendors, leading television networks, program providers, cable operators, and broadband communications equipment suppliers.
