How Big is a Pixel?

Incremental Pixel Tool Showing Width and Height

Some quick surfing around Internet Web sites demonstrates that some pages fit on the screen better than others. This page was created to help Web page designers calculate how much room they have to play with under a variety of different screen conditions. Essentially, this is a "ruler" for your monitor and Internet browser.

What can you do with this?

Suppose you want to design a Web page that looks best on a 640X480 resolution screen. If you have a multi-synch monitor you can switch to your 640X480 mode and the pre-measured lines will give you an idea how big your tables, frames, and images can be.

As you scroll down the page, you'll see that the 600 pixel-wide bar fits on the screen. Further down the page, you'll notice that the 275 pixel-tall bar fits into your viewable area. If you were using tables or frames as a layout tool, you could be fairly sure that a 600X275 pixel table would fit the screen. You can also use this tool as a guess-timator for sizing graphics.

Of course, these comparisons are somewhat arbitrary depending on the brand of viewer you're using -- but you can get the gist of the size you might get away with. View this page with different browsers and you'll see that the button bars and tool bars may take more room, shrinking the available size shrink even more.
