Troubleshooting the AnyKey Keyboard

IMPORTANT: If the model number on the underside of your keyboard matches either of the two listed below, hold down the Ctrl key while pressing the Program Macro key to start a macro. The Remapping and Repeat Rate keys, and
AT-style keyboard connector 2189014-00-212
PS/2-style keyboard connector 2189014-00-712
New PS/2 style keyboard connector 2191011-99-911

Since the AnyKey is a programmable keyboard, it is possibile to program or remap your keyboard without realizing you are doing so. It is also possible that someone else might accidentally or intentionally do this.

If you press a key and get one of the following:

  • The screen begins displaying multiple characters,
  • You press a letter, but the wrong letter appears,
  • You press a key and it doesn't do anything,

then this document can help you.

NOTE: The Program LED indicates Keyboard status. Steady green enables any macro the keyboard, flashing green indicates that a programming mode is active, and with the light off indicates that the keyboard macros are not enabled.

To fix a messed-up keyboard:

  1. (The computer must be powered on.) Press the Remap key. The PROGRAM light starts blinking
  2. Press the Ctrl key twice. This makes sure the Ctrl key is mapped to itself.
  3. Press the Alt key twice. This makes sure the Alt key also functions normally.
  4. Press the Suspend Macro key. The light stops blinking.
  5. Hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys while you press the Suspend Macro key. This erases all programming in the keyboard and restores it to normal operation.
  6. If the keyboard still refuses to work, try (or have someone else try) the above steps again to be sure they were followed correctly. If the keyboard is still malfunctioning, you may have something broken inside the keyboard. Call Gateway 2000 Technical Support.

To erase an existing macro:

  1. Press the Program Macro key.
  2. Press the key or combination of keys whose macro you want to erase. For example, if you have a macro that is activated by pressing Alt+F1, and you want to erase it, press Alt+F1.
  3. Press the Program Macro key again.

To suspend macro playback:

If you have programmed your keyboard, it powers up with the macros available. A steady PROGRAM light indicates this mode is active.

  1. (The system must be powered on.) Press the Suspend Macro Key. The Program LED goes off, and macros do not activate when you press a programmed key.

To reactivate macro playback:

  1. (The system must be powered on.) Press the Suspend Macro key when the Program LED is off. The LED lights and the keyboard resumes sending the macros.

To erase all macro and remapping information in the keyboard:

You can erase all macro and remap information stored in the keyboard at any time.

  1. Check to make sure that the Program LED is not flashing. If it is, press the Program Macro button to cause it to stop.
  2. Press the Suspend Macro key once.
  3. Hold down the Ctrl and Alt keys.
  4. While holding these keys down, press Suspend Macro.
  5. Let go of all three keys at the same time. The Program LED flashes for a few seconds while the keyboard erases all programmed information and reinitializes. (The more macros you have, the longer it blinks.) When the LED stops flashing, the erasure is complete.

Be sure you really want to permanently erase all the macros and remaps stored in your board before you do this!

Remapping Keys

You can remap any key on the keyboard to any other position. Therefore, it is possible to unintentionally remap a key.
To restore a remapped key to its original value:

  1. Check the status of your Program Macro Light. If the program light is on, then press the Suspend Macro key once. The light will go off. If the light is already off, go to step 2.
  2. Press the Remap key once. The program light will begin flashing.
  3. Press the key that you wish to restore twice.
  4. Press the Remap key once again. The program light will go off.
