Configuration/Setup Questions

I found a subdirectory on my hard drive called BACKUP. What is it for?

Your BACKUP subdirectory contains some backup files with default settings for your computer. We made this subdirectory so that if any of the following files are accidentally erased or corrupted, you can reload them from this subdirectory. The files are:

AUTOEXEC.BAT
CONFIG.SYS
COMMAND.COM
WINA20.386

What did the AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files look like when my computer first shipped from Gateway 2000?

Before we shipped your computer, we loaded a subdirectory called BACKUP on your hard drive. This subdirectory contains copies of the original AUTOEXEC.BAT and CONFIG.SYS files. If you do not have this directory, see document 1093 which contains information about recovering these files.

How do I get into the BIOS setup?

To access the BIOS setup page (also called the CMOS Setup program), go to a C:\> prompt and press the following keys together: Ctrl, Alt, and Esc. If you have a Mini Desktop computer, the keys are Ctrl, Alt, and S. Some computers have other combinations; see your Userís Guide if these donít work. You can also view document 1140.

What would cause the CMOS setup to go back to the defaults?

A system lockup, rebooting while an application is running, or a low battery can cause the CMOS settings to go back to the defaults. If it happens frequently, replace the system battery.
