How to Install the Matrox MGA Video Drivers

This document contains step-by-step instructions on how to install the Matrox MGA video drivers. Follow this procedure if you ever need to install these drivers.

Installation procedure:

  1. Insert the diskette labeled Matrox PCI Video Card Drivers Disk 1 of 3 in the A: drive. Type:

    a:\install

    and press Enter.

    A screen titled Welcome to MATROX MGA Software Installation appears. This screen gives you information about different Matrox boards, Drivers, Setup and Utilities, and the Windows drivers. Press Esc and the Main Menu appears.

    NOTE: If you are installing from the Gateway 2000 System CD version 3.4, 3.5, 3.6, or 4.0, type the following from the C:\ prompt:

    d:\vidriver\matrox\install.exe

    and press Enter. This document assumes that your CD-ROM is drive D. If it is a different drive, then use its drive letter in place of d:.
  2. Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, highlight UTILITIES AND SETUP PROGRAM and press Enter. This will bring up the Setup Installation Path.
  3. The default installation path is C:\MGA\SETUP. Press Enter to accept the default path. A screen appears showing the files being uncompressed and copied to the hard drive..
  4. Once the files are copied, a screen appears asking for the boot drive. The boot drive default is C:. Press Enter to accept this answer and continue.
  5. The next screen gives the following information.
    The MGAVESA.COM driver provides support for the VESA Super VGA Bios Extensions and/or the VESA Display Power management features. It is invoked by typing

    C:\MGA\SETUP\MGAVESA

    at the command prompt or inserting this line into your AUTOEXEC.BAT.
    Do you wish to load MGAVESA.COM from within your AUTOEXEC.BAT (Y/N) ?
    Press Y for Yes or N for No. Once you have made your choice, the installation program continues.
  6. The next screen gives the following information.
    If you are running with a single screen setup, we advise that you add the following line to your CONFIG.SYS file:

    DEVICE = C:\MGA\SETUP\RAMBIOS.SYS.

    Would you like this installation program to make these changes at this time (Y/N) ?
    Press Y for Yes or N for No. Once you have made your choice, the installation program continues.
  7. The next screen is an information screen telling you to go to the C:\MGA directory and type SETUP before using the board for the first time. Press any key to continue with the installation. This brings you back to the Main Menu.
  8. Using the arrow keys on the keyboard, highlight Windows 3.1 Drivers and Control Panel and press Enter.
  9. The next screen will ask you to enter the installation path for the MGA Control Panel. C:\MGA\CPANEL is the default directory the files will be copied to. Press Enter to accept this default answer and continue.
  10. The next screen gives you options to change the resolution of your desktop in Windows. Use the UP or DOWN Arrows on the keyboard to select a choice. Press Enter and another screen will appear with different choices. Highlight your choice, press Enter and your choice will appear on the screen. When the choice has been made, arrow down to Confirm Selection and press Enter to continue.
  11. The installation is now complete. Press any key and this will bring you back to the Main Menu. Arrow down to Exit and press Enter to make the selection. When you are back at the C:\> prompt, type

    win

    and press Enter to return to Windows.
  12. There should be a group titled MGA Series. Double click on the group. Double click on the Icon titled MGA Control Panel. This screen has different selections to make your desktop look the way you want it to. Highlight the settings of your choice and then click on OK. Windows will have to be restarted to implement the changes.
