This document provides step by step instructions on installingFaxWorks 3.0 on your Gateway 2000 computer system. FaxWorks is the communication package that ships with the Gateway 2000 TelePath IIv Fax Modem. If you ordered the TelePath IIv with your system, the software is already installed. Use this document to reinstall the software if needed or to perform a first time installation.

    a:setup

and press Enter or click on the OK button. After a few moments, the FaxWorks Features window appears on your screen.
Note: This document assumes that the A drive is the floppy drive that you inserted the program disk in. Use the appropriate letter for your computer.

  2. Type the path of where you want to place the FaxWorks files or use the default path, C:\FAXWORKS. Choose the Continue button to start the installation process. FaxWorks begins installing the files to your hard drive.

  3. When the installation program prompts you for the second disk, insert disk #2, and click on CONTINUE or press Enter.

  4. The setup program displays a dialog box indicating that the installation process is complete. Click on the OK button or press enter to continue. The Program Manager returns with the FaxWorks group open. The next steps take you through the initial setup of the software.

A group called FaxWorks is created when the software has finished installing. There are five icons within this group:

Communication Center The icon used to access bulletin board services and faxing documents.
Modem Diagnostics The icon used to test the modemís ability to communicate.
Registration The icon used to register your copy of FaxWorks with SoftNet, the manufacturer.
FaxWorks Help The icon used for help with specific areas of FaxWorks.
Quick Setup The icon used for configuring the modem and specific areas of faxing.

To perform the initial FaxWorks Setup:

  1. Once the software is installed, you need to setup the software for your computer. To begin the FaxWorks setup, double click on the Quick Setup icon. The Modem Diagnostics window appears. The MODEM DIAGNOSTICS screen highlights each step as it is completed. If the modem is attached to a phone line you will hear a dial tone when the program checks the phone line. If the modem is not connected to a phone line the program will not report an error, but no dial tone will be heard.

  2. The next window asks you if you want FaxWorks to be your default printer. Unless you want to always send faxes when printing, click on the NO button to continue.

  3. The next window displays the Modem identification information. This information displays the COM port and type of modem it found in the system. Even if the phone line is not hooked up, the program will report that a phone line is attached. Click on O.K. or press Enter to continue.

Note: The current Federal Communications Commission regulation part 68, Section 68.318 (c) (3) states that it is illegal to transmit a fax in the United States which does not contain the following sender information: "...in a margin on the top or bottom of each transmitted page or on the first page of the transmission, the date and time it is sent and an identification of the business, other entity, or individual sending the message and the telephone number of the sending machine of such business, other entity or individual."

If the computer is in your home, or you donít have to dial a special number to get outside your company, leave this field blank. Click on the NEXT button when finished.

Note: The comma produces a pause so that your phone system has a chance to respond to the previous input

  9. The FaxWorks 3.0 Long Distance Prefix dialog box appears. If your phone system requires a prefix code to get an outside line for long distance calls, enter the number(s) in the Long Distance Prefix field, followed by a comma. If you require a prefix number for this, enter it in. Otherwise leave the field blank and Enter and click on the NEXT button to continue with the installation.

  10. The FaxWorks 3.0 International Prefix dialog box appears. Note: Make sure you write your password down and keep it in a safe place in case you ever need to change it, or forget what it is.

  14. The FaxWorks 3.0 Toll Saver dialog box appears. Select the appropriate option to enable or disable the Toll Saver Option and then click the NEXT button to continue with the installation.

  15. The FaxWorks 3.0 Prompt for Fax dialog box appears. FaxWorks can play a default message when answering the phone that instructs the caller that they can send a fax at any time by pressing 0 on their telephone keypad. You can either Enable or Disable this option. Select the appropriate option to enable or disable the Prompt for Fax Option and click the NEXT button to continue with the installation.

  16. The FaxWorks 3.0 Prompt for Message dialog box appears. This allows you to tell FaxWorks to either play the default message that instructs the caller to leave a message after the tone. Select the appropriate option to enable or disable the message option and click the NEXT button to continue with the installation.

  17. If you have accounts on CompuServe, DELPHI and/or MCI MAIL you can enter the relevant details for each online service by pressing the CONTINUE button. If you do not use these services, press the SKIP button to ignore the online services setup.

  18. The setup program prompts you to either register your software now or later. If you chooses to register the software now, click on the Register Now button and the software dials a special 800 number and registers your software with the software company electronically. If you choose to Register Later or if the registration fails, fill-out and mail the registration card that came with your FaxWorks software.

  19. Congratulations. You have successfully installed the software. Click on the OK button to continue. You are now prompted to click on the YES button if you want to run the Call Center Software, or click the NO button if you donít.
