Troubleshooting TBU Problems
The purpose of this document is to assist you in troubleshooting a problem with your internal or external CMS (Colorado Memory Systems) TBU.
First, with either setup, use the standard software accompanying the drive. This is important, as it eliminates software compatibility problems.
Please note that for a short period of time, an installation note with incorrect information was shipped with the internal TBUís. If the problem youíre having with the drive is that one of the drive lights stays on and the TBU isnít recognized, check the floppy drive cable. Make sure the colored dotted line on pin 1 of the cable is furthest away from the power connector on the TBU.
To Troubleshoot the CMS 250 Internal TBU:
IMPORTANT. At times you will be asked to work inside your computer. If you must reach inside your system and reseat cards or cables, it is very important that you turn your system off. Damage to yourself and/or your computer can result if you leave the power running.
- With the power off, remove the cover from the system.
- If the TBU is already connected to the floppy drive cable, remove the connections to the floppy drives. Turn the system back on and try the TBU.
- If the TBU still does not work, reseat the floppy/TBU cable at all connections including the TBU. make sure you to get the cable back on all the connector pins.
- Once the cable is reattached, turn the system back on and try the TBU again.
- If the TBU light remains on or blinks for no apparent reason, with or without the other drives connected, the TBU must be replaced. Youíll need to contact Gateway Customer Support to order a replacement.
- If the TBU works with the cable disconnected from the floppy drives, but not with them connected, the problem could lie in either the power supply or the floppy cable. Gatewayís Customer Support department can assist you further and a part may need to be replaced.
- If the problem has been resolved by Reseating the cables, put the cover back on.
CMS Trakker TBU:
- If youíre using the CMS Windows software, make sure itís setup to use the Trakker and not the internal 250 TBU.
- Try a different tape to eliminate the possibility of a bad tape.
- Enter the CMOS setup and make sure you have the LPT port enabled (if you have a parallel printer, simply verify that the printer can print through LPT 1).
- Turn off your system and remove the cover. Reseat the parallel cable making sure that all the pins are covered by the black connector. Also reseat the parallel cable where it connects to the Trakker.
- If the port isnít working, the parallel cable should be replaced. Also, make sure the parallel cable is the correct cable, depending on whether itís supposed to be PCI or ISA. If this port is working, thereís a problem with the Trakker. In either case, if thereís a hardware problem, or if the issue canít be resolved, contact Customer Support for further assistance.
