Setting Up the Ensoniq Sound Card in Windows 95 and with MS-DOS Applications in Windows 95

Some of the information for this document was provided directly from Ensoniq Corporation. This document contains important information regarding the installation and use of the Ensoniq Soundscape driver under the Windows 95 operating system. Print this document and keep it for later reference. If you have a previous version of the Soundscape Windows 95 driver currently running on the computer, skip the section titled "Updating the Win95 drivers for Soundscape." If a non-Windows 95 driver is currently installed, continue. This document assumes that if you have an Ensoniq Soundscape Legacy or non-Plug & Play sound card, you have the latest pre-Windows 95 version of the drivers.

Uninstalling Ensoniq Drivers

Always uninstall older versions of Soundscape software before installing the Windows 95 specific drivers. Here’s why. When Windows 95 boots up, it keeps a log of all the different Base ports, IRQs and DMAs used by each device. With Soundscape installed, the system allocates these values as being used. When the updated drivers are installed, Windows 95 sees that the original values are being used and assigns the new drivers new values. These new values will not work, especially the new Base port value. Base port changes require a jumper change on legacy Ensoniq cards. The rule of thumb is always uninstall the Soundscape drivers before updating. If you do not have a previous version of Ensoniq Soundscape drivers already loaded on the computer, proceed to the next section.

  1. Place the first diskette of the original Ensoniq drivers in the A: drive. Use the Secondary mouse button, usually the right button, to click the My Computer icon. Click Explore to open the Explorer application.
  2. Locate the floppy drive on the left hand side of the Explorer screen and double click it. On the right hand side of the screen, locate the file UNINST.EXE. Once you locate this file, double click it to activate the Ensoniq driver’s uninstall utility. Follow the onscreen instructions completely.
  3. Once Windows 95 is restarted, right click the My Computer icon again. Click Explore to open the Explorer application. On the left hand side of the screen, locate the Windows folder. Click the + symbol beside the Windows folder to expand the subdirectories. Double click the System folder under Windows to open it.
  4. Look through the list of files on the right hand side of the screen. If any of the following files are found, delete them: SCOPE.COD, SNDSCAPE.CO0, SNDSCAPE.CO1, SNDSCAPE.CO2, SNDSCAPE.CO3, SNDSCAPE.CO4, SNDSCAPE.INI, SNDSCAPE.VXD, SNDSCP95.DRV. If these files are not found, proceed to the next section.
  5. Once all these files are deleted, click on the word View at the top of the Explorer screen to open that menu. Click the word Options to open that window. Under the Hidden files section, click the mouse to insert a bullet beside the Show all files settings. Click the OK button to return to the Explorer screen.
  6. Locate the Inf folder located under the Windows folder and double click it to open it. Scroll through the lies of files on the right hand side until the list of OEMx.INF files appear. Note: The letter x is representative of a number, such as 0,1, etc., depending on the number of OEM drivers on the hard drive. Double click each one until you locate the one specifically for Ensoniq. The word Ensoniq appears at the top of the specific OEMx.INF file when it is opened. Once this file is located, click the X on the upper right hand corner of the viewing screen to close it, then delete this file. Soundscape is now totally removed from the system and the updated Windows 95 drivers can be installed.

Installing the Windows 95 Soundscape Software for the first time

If you reboot the computer after uninstalling the original version of the Ensoniq Soundscape, Windows 95 will only automatically detect the presence of the Plug & Play sound card. Follow the instructions on the screen and when prompted for a diskette, preceed to step number 6 listed below.

If you do not reboot the computer after uninstalling the original version of the Ensoniq Soundscape or you have an Ensoniq Legacy sound card, proceed with the following steps.

  1. Click the Start button in the lower left hand corner of the screen. Click the word Settings on the Start menu. Click the Control Panel to open it.
  2. Double click the Add New Hardware icon in the Control Panel window to start the Add New Hardware Wizard.
  3. To begin the installation procedure, click the Next button at the bottom of this window. The next screen asks, "Do you want Windows to search for your new hardware?" Select No then click the Next button to continue.
  4. The next screen prompts you for the type of hardware to install. Select Sound, video and game controllers, then click the Next button at the bottom of the screen.
  5. When asked for the Manufacturer and Model of the hardware, DO NOT select Ensoniq. If you choose Ensoniq from the list of manufacturers, you may install an older version of the driver. Click the Have Disk button on the screen to continue.
  6. The Install from disk window appears on the screen. Place the Ensoniq Soundscape Windows 95 Drivers Disk #5 in the A: drive. In the Copy manufacturers files from: box, A:\ appears. Click the OK button to continue.

  8. A list of hardware settings Windows 95 wants to configure the driver with is displayed. These settings are based on the hardware’s physical settings on the sound card as well as the available settings on the system.
    • If you have a legacy Ensoniq sound card, write these values down and make sure that they match the jumpers on the sound card.
    • If you have a Plug & Play Ensoniq sound card, there are no jumpers to change.
  9. Click the Next button to continue and the drivers will load from the diskette. If the drivers is unable to load, power down the computer as instructed. Once Windows 95 restart, choose Yes, then verify the I/O jumpers on the sound card.

Loading drivers for MS-DOS applications

Some games require Windows 95 to reboot into DOS Mode in order to play properly. If this is the case, the Windows 95 multimedia applications software must be installed on the system to obtain sound support for the game. If you have not already done this, go to the section above titled "Installing the Windows 95 multimedia applications" before proceeding. The following lines must be in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file of the "Run MS-DOS Applications" icon on the Windows 95 desktop.

If you have not created or configured the "Run MS-DOS Applications" icon, see document 3101 for the details of the procedure.

If the "Run MS-DOS Applications" icon is already on the Windows 95 desktop, proceed with the following steps.

  1. To view the lines, right click the Run MS-DOS Applications located on the Windows 95 desktop. Click on the Properties setting from the menu that appears.
  2. The application’s Properties window appears on the screen. Along the top of the window are six tabs: General, Program, Font, Memory, Screen, and Misc. Click the Programs tab to open that screen. Toward the bottom center of this window, click on the Advanced button to continue.
  3. The Advanced Program Settings window appears on the screen. The bottom screen portion of this window contains the AUTOEXEC.BAT lines. To verify the following settings according to the part number of the sound card you have, make sure there is a check mark in the box beside MS-DOS mode and a bullet beside Specify a new MS-DOS configuration.

If you have the Ensoniq sound card, part number SNDCRD006AAWW, the lines should match the following:

    SET BLASTER=A220 Ixx Dx T1
    SET SNDSCAPE=C:\SNDSCAPE
    C:\SNDSCAPE\SSINIT /I

If you have the Ensoniq sound card, part number SNDCRD006ABWW or SNDCRD006ACWW, the lines should match the following:

    SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 T1
    SET SNDSCAPE=C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
    C:\SNDSCAPE\SSINIT /I

  4. Make any necessary adjustments to these lines by simply clicking the mouse within the line, deleting the incorrect setting, and typing in the correct settings. Click the OK button when finished viewing or modifying this file to close the window. Click the OK button again to return to the Windows 95 desktop.

You should now be able to play the game in this DOS session with sound support.
