This document contains instructions for setting up a Gateway 2000 28.8/33.6 baud modem in Windows 95. This document pertains to the Gateway 2000 fax modems with the part numbers MODISA005ABUS, MODISA005ADUS, MODISA005AEUS, 600553, MODISA008AAUS, MODISA008ABUS and MODISA008ACUS and the diskette part number MODDSX003ACUS only. The modem and diskette part numbers are located on the invoice that came with the computer or with the parts if purchased from Add-On sales. These instructions assume that the 3 ½ inch floppy drive is A: and the hard drive is C:.

Installation Instructions

Before installing the software for the modem, the modem should be jumpered for Plug & Play mode. Refer to the User's Guide that came with the modem for the specific location of the jumpers and the proper positions for Plug & Play mode.
  1. At the Windows 95 desktop, right click the My Computer icon in the upper left hand corner of the screen. Click the word Properties that appears on the menu. Across the top of the screen are four tabs: General, Device Manager, Hardware Profiles, and Performance. Click the Device Manager tab.
  2. Click the + symbol beside the word Ports displayed on the screen. Double-click the Communications Port (COM 2). Click the box beside the Original Configuration box to remove the check mark (Ö). Click the OK button at the bottom of the screen. This should place a red X or a yellow ! on the Communications Port (COM2) icon. Click the Close button at the bottom of the screen to return to the Windows 95 desktop. Click the Start button in the lower left hand corner of the screen. Click the word Shut down. Click the bullet beside Restart the computer? to reboot the computer and click the Yes button.
  3. As soon as the computer starts to reboot, press the appropriate key(s) to enter the CMOS or BIOS screens on the computer. Proceed to the section that lists the Serial or COM port settings. Make sure that COM A or Serial Port 1 is set to COM1 IRQ4. Make sure that COM B or Serial Port 2 is set to DISABLED. Save these settings and exit the CMOS or BIOS screens. The computer now reboots and re-enters Windows 95. Refer to the User's Guide that came with the computer for specific instructions on how to enter CMOS or BIOS screens, the location of the Serial or COM port settings, and how to exit the utility.
  4. Exit Windows 95 and power down the computer. Remove the case and slot cover on an empty ISA slot on the systemboard. Insert the modem into the empty ISA slot. Secure the modem with the screw you removed from the slot cover. Place the lid back on the computer and power the computer on.
  5. Once Windows 95 starts, a dialog screen appears stating that new hardware is found. Insert the diskette provided with the modem in the A: drive and click the OK button to continue. If a screen appears asking to load a Serial Wave Driver for future programs to use, click the OK button. This feature has no effect on the modems functionality with regard to the software that is provided by Gateway 2000. Once the driver installation is complete, the Windows 95 desktop appears. The modem is now configured properly.
