Possible causes
- Windows 95 detects a conflict between the modem and another device or other resources.
- The proper Windows modem driver files are corrupt or not properly installed.
- Numerous Windows modem driver files are installed in Windows 95.
If you are using the modem diskette with part number MODDSX008ABUS or the upgrade file from the Gateway 2000 Bulletin Board Service, the modem appears as a TelePath 33.6 fax modem instead of a TelePath 28.8 fax modem. For the sake of simplicity, the remainder of this document uses the TelePath 33.6 fax modem for all modem references.Removing the current modem settings from Windows 95
- 1.Power the computer on and enter Windows 95. Click the Start button in the lower left hand corner of the screen. Click the word Settings that appears on the menu. Click the word Control Panel to open it. Double click the TelePath 33.6 fax modem icon to open it.
- A Properties for TelePath 33.6 fax modem window appears. Locate the Uninstall button and click it. A screen appears asking for confirmation of the device removal. Click the Yes button. When the modem is successfully removed, click the OK button to close the window. The TelePath 33.6 fax modem icon is still present in the Control Panel but it can not be opened. This is normal. Click the X button in the upper right hand corner of the Control Panel screen to return to the Windows 95 desktop.
- Right click the My Computer icon in the upper left hand corner of the screen. Click the word Explore to open the Explorer application. Across the top of the window are five menus: File, Edit View, Tools, and Help. Click the word View, then click the Options choice on this menu.
- The Options window appears. Locate the Show All Files setting at the top of the window and click it to place a bullet next to this selection. Make sure there is not a check beside Hide MS-DOS file extensions for the file types that are registered option. Once any necessary changes are made, click the OK button to return to the Explorer.
- On the left hand side of the screen, click the + symbol beside the (C:) drive to display all the folders on the hard drive. Double click the Windows folder to displayother folders under this. Double click the INF folder. On the right hand side of the screen, the files within this folder are displayed. Double click files matching the OEMx.INF where x is replaced by a number (e.g. OEM2.INF, OEM6.INF, etc.). In each of these files, look for a reference to modem configuration. If there is a reference to a modem, click the file by clicking the X button in the upper right hand corner of the Notepad or WordPad window, then press the Delete key on the keyboard. Click the Yes button when prompted to remove the file. Continue this pattern until all the related OEMx.INF files are deleted. Once the procedure is complete, click the X button in the upper right hand corner of the Explorer window to close it and return to the Windows 95 desktop.
- Right click the Recycle Bin icon on the left hand side of the Windows 95 desktop screen. Click the words Empty Recycle Bin if it is not grayed out. Click the Yes button when prompted to delete the files.
- Right click the My Computer icon in the upper left hand corner of the screen. Click the word Properties that appears on the menu. Across the top of the System Properties window are four tabs: General, Device Manager, Hardware Profiles, and Performance. Click the Device Manager tab to view the information.
- Double click the Ports (COM & LPT) icon on the screen. Double click Communications Port (COM2) to open it. In the Device Usage box at the bottom o fthe screen, click once in the box next to Original Configuraiton to remove the check mark (Ö) beside it. Click the OK button to return to the previous window. Click the Close button at the bottom of the System Properties window to return to the Windows 95 desktop. Click the Start button in the lower left hand side of the screen. Click the Shut down option on the menu. When prompted, click the Restart the computer? choice on the menu.
- As soon as the computer starts to reboot, press the appropriate key(s) to enter the CMOS or BIOS screens on the computer. Proceed to the section that lists the Serial or COM port settings. Make sure that COM A or Serial Port 1 is set to COM1 IRQ4. Make sure COM B or Serial Port 2 is set to DISABLED. Save these settings and exit the CMOS or BIOS screens. The computer now reboots and re-enters Windows 95. Refer to the User's Guide that came with the computer for specific instructions on how to enter CMOS or BIOS screens, the location of the Serial or COM port settings, and how to exit the utility.
Setting up the modem in Windows 95
- 1.As Windows 95 restarts, the COM ports are installed. Note: if the information in the following steps does not appear, all the OEMx.INF files are not deleted. Return to the 'Removing the current modem settings from Windows 95' section of this document before continuing.
- Once Windows 95 boots up, a dialog screen appears stating that new hardware is found. Insert the modem diskette provided with the modem. Make sure the program is looking for the software in the appropriate location. Click the OK button to install the drivers. Once Windows 95 finishes loading, the Windows 95 desktop appears.
Viewing the modem settings
- Right click the My Computer icon in the upper left hand corner of the screen. Click the word Properties that appears on the menu. Across the top of the screen are four tabs: General, Device Manager, Hardware Propfiles, and Performance. Click the Device Manager tab. Double click the Modem or Ports (COM & LPT) icon in the list of hardware on the computer. The modem should be displayed as a TelePath 33.6 fax modem.
- Click the X in the upper right hand corner of the System Properties window to return to the Windows 95 desktop. Make sure the communications program is set to recognize the modem at COM2 IRQ3. The modem should fucntion properly now.
