Issue: The manual (part number NETMAN015AAUS) for the SMC ISA Ethernet Cards (part numbers NETTWP004AAUS and NETTWP005AAUS) does not provide instructions on how to install a Plug and Play Operating System and/or application software from a server using a network boot diskette when the SMC ISA Ethernet Card is in Plug and Play mode.Note: If loading the Plug and Play Operating System ( or Application Software) locally, the above procedure will not be necessary.
Resolution: If, for any reason, the Hard Drive has (or needs) to be formatted and you wish to connect to the server to load the Plug and Play Operating System (example Win ‘95), the following steps are required.
- Copy the file DWCFGMG.SYS (from the Intel® ISA Configuration Utility diskette #1) onto the network boot diskette.
- Edit or create a CONFIG.SYS (on the network boot diskette), and add the following device line: DEVICE=A:\DWCFGMG.SYS
The Configuration Manager driver (DWCFGMG.SYS -- included with the ICU software) will automatically assign non-conflicting resources to all Plug and Play devices and activate all Plug and Play devices.
To install a WFW 3.11 platform using the SMC ISA Ethernet Card in Plug and Play mode, the ICU must be loaded on the Hard Drive prior to loading WFW 3.11 because WFW 3.11 is not a Plug and Play operating system. Therefore, insert the Intel ISA Configuration Utility diskette #1 in drive A, and type Install. This procedure will load all directories/files and modify the CONFIG.SYS when prompted, etc. The ICU consists of two diskettes. If the network drivers have not been installed, they must be installed at this time.
The above procedures are necessary since the SMC drivers (NETTWP004AAUS and NETCMB005AAUS) default with Plug and Play set to Enabled. With Plug and Play logic turned on, a Plug and Play Operating System or Configuration Manager must be present to activate the card.
