Issue: After loading the HP LaserJet 4 Family drivers for Windows® 3.x (Windows Printing System version 1.30 and earlier), the system may become unstable when trying to share the printer in Windows For Workgroups 3.1x. The Print Manager stalls the next print job(s), leaving zero bytes in a file in the Print Manager and erratic mouse movement on the system sharing the printer. The queue will continue to grow with print jobs as they are sent without printing any. The only way to correct this is to exit Print Manager, and then exit Windows.Resolution: Expand the PRINTMAN.EXE and PRINTMAN.HLP files off of the System CD or Windows diskettes to the Windows directory.
- Insert the diskette or CD that contains PRINTMAN.EX_. Go to the C prompt in DOS.
- Change to the Windows subdirectory and type EXPAND (Drive Letter where file is located):\PRINTMAN.EX_.
- The expand program will ask for a name for the file to be expanded into. Type C:\WINDOWS\PRINTMAN.EXE (or other path to the Windows directory). The original Print Manager is now loaded and should allow successful printing to the HP LaserJet printer
Note: The Windows 3.x software is not compatible with the version of Print Manager included in the HP Printing System version 1.30 and earlier. When installing the HP Printing System, the installer will overwrite the existing PRINTMAN.EXE file with a different version.
