FONTS

Bellow you will find a discription of the two diferent styles of fonts that are used with the Amiga.

The Amiga uses two diferent styles of Fonts Bitmap and Outline.

  1. Bitmap Fonts are defined as a pattern of dots that compose a character. Bitmap font files are stored on disk for each size.
  2. Outline font character shapes are defined mathematically and are generated to whatever size or resolution needed.

The FONTS: directory or Disk contains the information for all the different style of fonts available to the system. Font information is stored differently for bitmap and outline fonts.

BITMAP FONTS

For each bitmap font you will find a subdirectory and a .font file. The font sub-directory contains files for the different point sizes that are available. each file contains the bitmap representation of every character in the font at that point size.

For example, for the Emerald font, there is a Emerald sub-directory and an Emerald.font file. The Emerald directory contains two files: 17 and 20. these files contain the information for the font at those sizes. the emerald .font file contains the list of point sizes and any available styles such as bold, italics for the font.

Many programs come with their own additional fonts that you should copy to your FONTS: directory or disk. After these have been added run FIXfonts to create the .font file for the new additions.

OUTLINE FONTS

The Compugraphic Intellifont outline font system used on the Amiga stores font data differently. As with bitmap fonts, there is a .font file for each typeface. There is also a .otag file for each. The two sub-directories _bullet and _bullet_outlines contain the actual outline information for the typefaces installed on your system. You should not try to manipulate these files, always use the Intellifont program or your applications font installation tool to manage outline fonts.
