RESEARCH EXPERIENCE
RESEARCH ASSISTANT,
Department of Physics and Astronomy, The University
of Calgary, 1989 - Present
Year-round research toward my theses. Included the observation, reduction and analysis of
data ranging from the radio to the X-ray wavelengths (primarily radio wavelengths).
Involved a variety of image processing and visualization techniques for both continuum
and line data. Writing of research proposals. Travel to observatories to observe and
reduce data. Maintained close ties with staff at the
Dominion Radio Astrophysical
Observatory (DRAO). Specific projects include:
-
Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope 327 MHz Survey - required
determining positional offset of fields observed at two epochs for
later combining, searching for source variability, determination of
source attenuation due to offsets from pointing center, mosaicing of
overlapping fields, and comparison of resulting data with high
frequency radio and infra-red data to search for supernova remnants.
In addition, reduced and analyzed radio polarization data.
- Very Large
Array follow-up observations - wrote proposals for higher-resolution
follow-up observations based on above research, obtained data with
initial calibration already completed, created and deconvolved resulting
images, analyzed to look for supernova remnants and pulsars.
- DRAO 26m Radio Telescope
Observations - initiated and carried out 21 cm line observations,
edited and calibrated data, analyzed to look for large structures
in the line data, compared line data with radio continuum and infra-red data.
- DRAO synthesis telescope
observations - 5 observations of large fields at 408 and 1420 MHz
(continuum) and 1420 MHz (128 line maps), created and deconvolved
images, added data from single-dish observations to get maps with
information on all spatial scales down to the resolution of the
telescope, compared continuum with line data to look for
associated structures in line data, comparison with data at a
variety of other wavelengths.
- ROSAT X-ray observations - observed 3 fields centered on
possible supernova-remnants, wrote proposal, received calibrated data,
corrected for varying sensitivity over field, searched for
emission associated with supernova remnants.
-
Five Colleges
Radio Astrophysical Observatory (FCRAO) observations -
traveled to FCRAO to observe several fields in a spectral line
at 3mm, reduced and analyzed data, compared with radio continuum
and line data at other wavelengths.
- Other - Investigated ways of comparing and presenting multiple wavelength
data. Investigated use of the Internet for collection and
dissemination of scientific data and information. Supervised
students working on term and summer projects in my supervisors absence.
TEACHING EXPERIENCE
GRADUATE ASSISTANT (TEACHING), Department of Physics and
Astronomy, The University
of Calgary, 1989 - Present
Part-time instruction of first-year undergraduate physics and astronomy laboratory sections. This entailed pre-laboratory preparation, in-lab supervision, marking of laboratory reports, and the supervision and marking of quizzes.
OTHER
WEB MANAGER - Created and maintain most documents for the
Radio Astronomy Laboratory World Wide Web (WWW) server at The University of Calgary.
Co-web manager for the Calgary Unix Users Group (CUUG) -
responsible for the
"Virtual Tourist" information.
