Symbiotic Stars

Symbiotic Stars

The class of objects known as "symbiotic stars" are being actively studied by members of the lab. These objects are generally considered to consist of two stars, a late type giant and a hot compact companion, surrounded by a gaseous nebula. The detection of periodic "outbursts" in the optical and radio regeimes suggests that the two stars are interacting. Harold Kenny is currently using high resolution radio data (combining VLA and MERLIN observations) to learn more about the nature and evolution of symbiotic stars.
