San Diego Children's Hospital and Apunix Computer Services have been involved in a collaborative project with Jack Horner, world renowned paleontologist and curator of The Museum of the Rockies.

Jack Horner was the primary consultant to Steven Speilberg for making the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, as realistic as possible. One of the central characters in the movie is based on the life and research of Jack Horner. Jack Horner's passion is for determining how dinosaurs lived. He is involved in leading edge scientific research in obtaining 3d images of dinosaur fossils.

Glenn Daleo, the leading CT Technologist at Children's Hospital, has developed an exciting new technique whereby fossils can be successfully CAT scanned (see InfoLane article Dinosaur Eggs and Bones), can be obtained. Using 3d imaging software on a Sun Workstation, Glenn has created visually striking 3d images showing detail in dinosaur fossils never seen before.

Glenn is one of the leaders in the country with respect to using Cemax's 3d software. Glenn has CAT scanned and done 3d imaging on fossils from Jack Horner including a dinosaur egg and juvenile dinosaur skull. Glenn's ability to obtain information from difficult dinosaur fossils has led to better imaging techniques for patients.

Apunix Computer Services has integrated state of the art hardware and software together for Children's hospital and Jack Horner. Apunix installed the imaging system for Jack in Bozeman, Montana and has worked with him closely on the 3d imaging project. Apunix has written software which allows Jack and Glenn to view animation loops of the 3d images on standard video tapes, and be able to disseminate the information to their colleagues. Apunix has also provided the ability to obtain high quality prints of the images. Apunix was nominated for a Smithsonian Computer Award for the work involving the dinosaur imaging project.
