Department of Paleobiology

National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution

Paleobiology is the study of living organisms of the past and the environments in which they lived. The collections in the Department of Paleobiology are among the largest of their kind in the world. More than 30 million specimens include sediments, amber, plants, invertebrates, and vertebrates.

Staff members in the Department of Paleobiology focus on three main areas: evolutionary history of major plant and animal groups; the organization of ancient ecosystems and their response to global change; and the history of the world's rivers, lakes, and oceans. This research includes field work in North America, the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, Africa, Asia, and Antarctica.

Popular topics in paleobiology on which Museum researchers are authorities include: origins and evolution of the atmosphere, origins and evolution of life on Earth, plant-insect coevolution, dinosaurs, mass extinctions, and global climate change.
