Since May 25, 1995, Jürgen E. Schrempp has been Chairman of Daimler-Benz AG, Stuttgart. He was born on September 15, 1944, in Freiburg. After his school education he completed an apprenticeship as an automobile mechanic at the Mercedes-Benz Freiburg Branch before going on to graduate with a diploma in engineering.Since 1967 Schrempp has worked in a number of different areas at the Daimler-Benz AG head offices. In 1974 he was appointed to the management of the South-African subsidiary, Mercedes-Benz of South Africa (then still trading as UCDD), initially in the Service Division and after 1980 as the board member responsible for engineering.
In 1982 Jürgen E. Schrempp took over as President of Euclid Inc., Cleveland/Ohio, USA, at the time a 100 % subsidiary of Daimler-Benz AG and manufacturer of extreme heavy-duty vehicles. After successfully initiating and completing the disinvestment programme with that corporation, Schrempp returned as Vice-President of Mercedes-Benz of South Africa in 1984. In 1985 he was appointed President of the Board of Management of the South African subsidiary company. From January 1, 1987, to December 31, 1988, Jürgen E. Schrempp assumed responsibility for sales in the Commercial Vehicle Division of Daimler-Benz AG, while at the same time serving as deputy member of the Board of Management of Daimler-Benz AG responsible for the Commercial Vehicle Division.
In the course of the reorganisation of the Daimler-Benz Group Schrempp was nominated President and Chief Executive Officer of the newly founded Deutsche Aerospace AG on May 19, 1989, - now trades under the name of Daimler-Benz Aerospace AG - and at the same time assumed full membership on the Board of Management for Daimler-Benz AG. During the period he was responsible for Daimler-Benz Aerospace, all the activities in the aerospace field in the Daimler-Benz Group were regrouped and reorganised under that corporation; the acquisition of the majority holding in Fokker, the Dutch aircraft manufacturer, was also undertaken under Schrempp's management. Daimler-Benz Aerospace thus became the largest aerospace enterprise in Europe.
In its meeting on June 29, 1994, the Supervisory Board of Daimler-Benz AG approved the resolution nominating Jürgen E. Schrempp to be the successor to Edzard Reuter as Chairman of the Board of Management for Daimler-Benz AG. He assumed this office at the close of the Annual Shareholders' Meeting of Daimler-Benz AG on May 24, 1995.
