The New E-Class in the Wind Tunnel (177 kB)
New record: the aerodynamic design of the new Mercedes-Benz E-class was put to the test in the wind tunnel - and passed with flying colors. The Cd value of 0.27 not only represents a new record - it also means less fuel for more mileage. For example, the "E 290 Turbodiesel" can manage 1050 kilometers on a single tank of fuel. Tested according to the Euromix formula (average of urban driving, 90 kph, and 120 kph), fuel consumption runs at 6.2 liters per 100 kilometers (38 miles per U.S. gallon).
The New E-Class in the Water Channel (88 kB)
The developer as frogman: experiments in the water channel preceded the aerodynamic measurements on the E-class in the wind tunnel. Thanks to the fact that water exhibits different flow properties from those of air, it was possible to work with a 1:5 scale model.
Streamlined Locomotive (160 kB)
Keeping air resistance as low as possible is also important for locomotives. However, the new "12 X" locomotive from AEG also exhibits several other eye-catching features. Thanks to the use of lightweight materials and modular design, the locomotive is suitable for a wide range of uses. Depending on requirements, it can serve as a high speed train power car, a rail motorcar, or a mainline locomotive for freight traffic.
Virtual Reality (75 kB)
It is now possible to "experience" vehicles in the research laboratory - even before the first screw has been produced. Researchers from Daimler-Benz in Berlin use virtual reality to investigate how drivers perceive different types of vehicle interior.
Freightliner Truck (105 kB)
Mercedes-Benz's U.S. subsidiary Freightliner has expanded to become the leading manufacturer of heavy trucks on the American market. The picture shows a "Class 8" truck.
Tracking the Oil Polluters (83 kB)
The pilots from Naval Squadron 5 in Kiel can spot oil slicks from 80 kilometers away thanks to a specially equipped "Do 228" from Daimler-Benz Aerospace. And that's good news for the environment - and bad news for ships discharging oil residues or washing out their tanks at sea.
Lightweights (249 kB)
Plastics are lighter than metals. They can be used to save weight - and for mobile systems that means fuel. Fiber-reinforcement gives plastics strength that often exceeds that of metals. The picture shows a whole range of lightweight engineering techniques with plastics.
The Star of Her Desire (195 kB)
This Mercedes-Benz advertisement from 1929 advertised the first economical mid-range Mercedes (Model 200 and 260). It appeared as the back cover of the magazine "Motor". More of these advertisements and posters will be coming to the Gallery soon!
