The Mercedes-Benz factories in Germany are integrated in a modern production system with mutual supplies of assemblies and components. The headquarters and development centre are located in Stuttgart-
Untertürkheim, where all passenger car engines, transmissions and axles are also produced. The company's largest factory is the bodywork and assembly plant in Sindelfingen which is closely interlinked with the assembly plants in Bremen and Rastatt. The factories in Berlin- Marienfelde , Hamburg-Harburg and Bad Homburg also belong to the Passenger Car Division. The latter altogether employs approx. 83,200 people.Mercedes-
Benz see themselves as an exclusive manufacturer of premium cars in all attractive segments of the market. The company's internationally unique tradition as an innovative producer of high- quality cars is to be consistently continued into the next millennium. At the beginning of 1993, the company announced the far-reaching re- orientation of its strategic product policy. In addition to the current model series in the core segments of the C-, E-, S- and SL-classes, Mercedes- Benz will in the future also offer an A-class, positioned below the C-class, a mono- volume vehicle and a sport utility vehicle. Together with the Swiss company SMH (Schweizerische Gesellschaft für Mikroelektronik und Uhrenindustrie), Mercedes- Benz also plan to produce a two- seater city car. By tradition, Mercedes-
Benz passenger cars are manufactured in Germany. Nonetheless, assembly plants have for many years been in existence in the Far East and in South Africa. In addition to the marketing of their cars the world over, Mercedes- Benz now plan to expand their production activities abroad. Experience with passenger car assembly in South Africa and Mexico has shown that the Mercedes philosophy can now also be pursued outside Germany, without any reductions in quality. From the "Made in Germany" label, in future a new slogan will evolve: "Made by Mercedes- Benz". The activities in South Korea and India also demonstrate the re-orientation of the Passenger Car Division. A milestone in the internationalisation strategy is the new US passenger car plant to be constructed in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, for an annual production of some 60,000 units of the new four- wheel drive sport utility vehicle from 1997 onwards.
