From: Greenpeace ship MV Solo tracking Pacific Pintail
Date: FRI 24-MAR-95 07:15:54 GMT - DAY 30, PART I
The Pacific Pintail's position (0700 GMT) is some 500 miles straight West of Quarello (Chile), in a position of 51 degrees 21 minutes south, and 089 degrees and 03 minutes west. The ship's course is 320 degrees and it is sailing at a speed of 13 knots. The Pacific Pintail is sailing towards Easter Island that lies some 1,750 miles to the northwest.
While the Pacific Island states are preparing for the passage of the Pacific Pintail, the nuclear industry has stated that essential information concerning the route shipments of radioactive waste and plutonium will follow also in the future will be kept secret. British, French and Japanese plutonium industry officials clearly intend to prevent that a growing number of nations will condemn these highly dangerous shipments, and subsequently request at international meetings for the industry to halt them.
The current transport onboard the Pacific Pintail involves glassified high level nuclear waste generated in the course of plutonium reprocessing in France for the Japanese. Greenpeace calls for a world-wide ban on the production of all plutonium --both military and civil--in its campaign to halt nuclear weapons production and proliferation. The organization is encouraging countries around the world to call for a halt to the plutonium industry at Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) talks at the United Nations in New York in April. The island States of the Pacific may well play a crucial role in the voting that is to take place over the extension of the Treaty.
