At a young age, Detroit-born Gary Karp became infected by his mother's love of music. By the age of seven, he was already navigating his guitar through Peter, Paul & Mary songs. Within music Karp was able t find an emotional center where he struck upon a mode of self-exploration through an expanding vocabulary of musical forms. Performing mainly in coffee houses and cafes, he has managed to access and maintain the direct intimacy of his medium. Tragically, advancing tendonitis and muscle straining problems have created a pain threshold that is forcibly distancing Karp from his guitar. Fortunately Karp is also a singer, architect and a computer graphics maven, and is now exploring computer-facilitated music as a possible solution to his physical limitations.
From the Heart is a collection of evolved improvisations that has allowed the artist to achieve his long-held goal to make a record of his most intimate musical insights into himself. Most of the cuts were selected from takes either of raw emotional indulgence, of technical discipline, or of an attempted blend of feeling and technique. Wrestling with the aesthetic nakedness of solo instrumental pieces, Karp's final choice of repertoire reflects his ability to create at once subtle and intense, complex and uncomplicated, sensual and honest sounds. The album offers the listener a panorama of emotional experiences and, within its innately vulnerable core, it carries a certain strength of spirit.
