Heidelberg hosts Germany's oldest university with more than 30,000 students, the Max-Planck-Institutes, the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL), and the German Cancer Research Center. Traditional economic enterprises are located here just as well as young firms with new products on developping markets. International corporations such as IBM, Asea Brown Boveri and Heidelberger Druckmaschinen entertain R&D centers here.
More than 10 museums, communal and private theatres, cabarets, art galleries and international meeting-points all contribute to Heidelberg's versatile cultural life.
The romantic and the scientific/scholarly Heidelberg also shape every day life for the city's more than 140,000 residents. We want to protect Heidelberg's beauty. Therefore we aim to reduce pressures on our environment and support future-oriented projects which emphasize environmental aspects also in our hotels and gastronomy.
In the name of all Heidelberg citizens I thank you for coming, wish you wonderful relaxing and exciting hours and days in our city.
Beate Weber, Mayor of the City of Heidelberg
