Introdduction and intentions of the ICPD

The leading aim of the IXth International Conference on Production Diseases in Farm Animals in Berlin 1995 is to continue and maintain the tradition and standards of previous conferences held in Bern, Switzerland (1992), Ithaca, USA (1989), Belfast, United Kingdom (1986), Uppsala, Sweden (1983), Munich, Germany (1980), Wageningen, The Netherlands (1976), Reading, United Kingdom (1971) and Urbana, USA (1968). The ICPD 1995 is the second conference in Germany and the first in Berlin where Veterinary Medicine and Agricultural Sciences have an old tradition. The political changes in Berlin and in East Europe now open new opportunities for scientific communication and possible cooperation.

High producing farm animals (dairy cows, beef cattle, pigs, poultry, sheep etc.) are permanently challenged by a variety of factors : Improper nutrition (deficit/surplus), housing systems, infections, stress etc. Consequently, the incidence, course and outcome of production diseases are changing continuously. Therefore new information on prevention, diagnosis and treatment of production diseases are needed. These problems are complicated by the discussion of animal welfare, the rapid changes in agricultural production and the economy of production. Furthermore large-scale livestock farming creates an increasing number of environmental problems (air pollution, release of methane, contamination of the ground-water etc.) which could be a limiting factor for animal production in some areas in the near future.

The complexity of these problems can only be analysed, pushed forward or eventually solved by an interdisciplinary approach which could stimulate new ideas for research and collaboration. Lectures of these toare provided by invited speakers. Free communications (oral presentation or posters) referring to all topics are kindly requested.

The organizing committee warmly invites you and your colleagues to attend the ICPD in Berlin. The scientific and the social programme too should be of interest and provide an atmosphere for conversation and discussion of all aspects of research and of cultural matters.

We hope you will join us in September in Berlin.

For the Local Organizing Committee

Holger Martens
Chairman
