Northwest strengthened its U.S. route system by acquiring
Republic Airlines in 1986.
In 1989, Northwest became privately held in a $3.65 billion transaction by a group
of investors headed by Alfred Checchi, Gary Wilson and Fred Malek.
In 1992, Northwest added Beijing, China; Albuquerque,
N.M.; and Richmond, Va., to its route network.
In 1993, Northwest added Raleigh/Durham, N.C., Greenville/Spartanburg, S.C.,
and Reno, Nev., to its route network, and in 1994,
Charlotte, N.C. and Boise, Idaho were added.
In March 1994, Northwest returned to the ranks of publicly traded companies.
