The 3rd Lyon Biennale d'Art Contemporain, December 1995 - March 1996, will be the first international event of this scope to be devoted exclusively to works of art created with the aid of new technologies.
The Biennale de Lyon 95 will commemorate, in its own way, the first century of the cinema, and will pay tribute to the Lumière brothers, opening the second century of cinematographic history onto the prospects of the future: technological, interactive and creative.
The Biennale de Lyon 95 will put forward a choice of works by contemporary artists who have been inspired by the mythology of the cinema, or who use the all-digital, with a return to narration, video installations, interactivity, virtuality, multimedia and network art, without determining categories or trying to define typologies. In all, there will be approximately a hundred artists, chosen from around the international scene. Up to January 24 1995, 57 artists had been selected. Prospection is continuing in Europe, the United States, Canada and Asia. The final choice will be made in April 1995.
The exhibition will make it possible to get a better idea of the scope of the upheavals that were introduced by the use of video in the visual arts, and will serve as a preface to the research efforts developed by the younger generation from 1980 up to the most recent innovations in terms of infography, interactivity, virtuality and telepresence.
The Biennale will be accompanied by productions related to new technologies: a HDTV film, to be shown on a cable channel, a videoconference, a catalog, and the production of a CD ROM.
The Biennale will be held at a new site : the Cité Internationale, entirely constructed by Renzo Piano between the river Rhône and the largest wooded park in Lyon. will occupy an area of 8 000 m2, and, on the occasion of the inauguration of the new Musée d'Art Contemporain of Lyon. It will present creations and productions of new works, previously-unmounted exhibitions, interactive installations and multimedia events (performances, theater, dance, concerts).
