Sports Teams and Facilities in Calgary

Calgary is home to a number of professional sports teams. The most famous of these are the Calgary Flames (an alternate Falmes home page can be found here) of the National Hockey League, the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian Football League, and the AAA Calgary Cannons of the Pacifac Coast League. Prices for Flames tickest are typically a bit steep (ph. (403) 261-0455 for current prices), but the Stampeders tickets are more reasonable (ph. (403) 289-0258), while tickets for the Cannons are a steal (ph. (403) 284-1111).

As home to the 1988 Winter Olympics, Calgary has a number of world-class facilities. The worlds first indoor speed-skating oval is located on the campus of the University of Calgary. At Canada Olympic Park there ski-jumping facilities and a bobsled and luge track.

For those whose idea of fun is racing cars and motorcycles, Race City Speedway is home to a 1/8 mile drag racing track, and a road course. If your idea of "horsepower" requires horses, Calgary is home to Spruce Medows, one of the premier show jumping facilities in the world. Stampede Park is home to thoroughbred and harness racing.

Calgary is also home to more than two dozen ice-skating (and hockey rinks), as well as numerous swimmimg pools, golf courses, gyms and even an indoor tennis facility. There are three "leisure centres" in the city which combine a number of the facilities under one roof. These are the Southland Leisure Centre (includes a wave pool!) on Southland Dr. S.W., the Family Leisure Centre (on Boneventure Dr. S.E.), and the Village Square Leisure Centre (on 56 th St. N.E.). The Lindsay Park aquatic centre (on MacLeod Tr. S.W.) is home to swimming, track, weightlifting and squash facilities. Finally, if your idea of a sport requires standing hip deep in cold water with a rod and reel, the Bow River just south of Calgary offers excellent trout fishing.
