Today's information and publication systems have problems in meeting the needs for precise information retrieval, mutual information rearrangement, and selective documents' transfer; new media must be utilized interactively.

IPSI is working collectively on this new generation of active media.

The goal is to develop systems offering tailored, knowledge based support for the entire spectrum of publication and information activities. It may involve both the high quality production of traditional print media, as well as of new multimedia documents combining text, graphics, speech, music, sound, pictures, animation, and digital video. Active media components should be able to perform automatically many information/communication tasks which today would require too much expert knowledge, time, and money.

Working on this goal are four IPSI divisions (see also graphic, 13K):
