FROM: GREENPEACE CREW OCCUPYING THE SHELL BRENT SPAR OIL PLATFORM DATE: 18 MAY, 1995 - DAY 19
We have just heard that Belgium and Iceland have joined Denmark in the protest against the UK government's decision to allow Shell to dump the disused Brent Spar oil platform into the North Sea - as you can imagine, morale is very high on the Spar today although conditions remain bearable! The European Parliament has also spoken out against the UK government's decision and is going to send letters to the North Sea Conference member states -the UK, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Denmark, Germany, Norway, Sweden and Switzerland - to express its concern over this deliberate pollution of the marine environment. International pressure increases on the UK, known better as 'the dirty old man of Europe'
More good news today - Shell failed in an attempt to evict us from the platform. Apparently, the judge at the Edinburgh Court of session said he wanted more time to consider his decision! This is a very important decision since our occupation of the Brent Spar is the only thing stopping Shell from dumping this toxic dilapidated oil rig into the North Sea. Of course, Shell were confident of the outcome and have already booked some expensive contractors to decommission the toxic-laden platform this weekend...all this waiting is costing them money but we are staying as long as we have to to reverse this ridiculous plan to dump the rig at sea!
Bye from the high spirited occupants of the gently swaying platform in the North Sea.
