The excavations revealed considerable remains of the early churches under the present building, so that it was decided to present these to the public in the form of w walk-through museum underneath the church floor. An excavation museum was thus created, which was opened to the public in 1968.
Crypt
The crypt of the second church, Excavation Museum St. Dionysius.

Almost thirty years later, it is time to develop a new concept to replace the original rather sparse exhibition, and also to take the opportunity to renovate the interior, in particular the asbestos-filled ceiling of the exhibition must be replaced.
After many long hours of negotiations and discussion the Esslingen City Museum, the state Baden-Württemberg and the Evangelical church committee have begun the necessary work in 1997, though only the first stage can be realized at the moment.
The next stage of the renewal of the Excavation Museum, the new concept for the improvement of the presentation for the visitor, will habe to wait. Due to the present financial situation, this can only be pursued step by step as small amounts of money become available. We hope that sponsors can be found willing to support our efforts to accomplish our aim to serve a broader public with a better museum inthe future; interested parties are very welcome to contact us ...
