8/20 Touring Car
T
his is a particularly rare small horsepowered Benz, called the 8/20 Touring Car. Carl Benz was more concerned with the production of a jewel-like car rather than opting for speed, as Mercedes was. This Benz was imported by a prominent family in upper New York State. From 1915 until 1929, the Benz remained on the estate of the first owner, who used the car to bring the family down to the lake at the edge of their property. The Benz was kept inside the house and used only in the summer at the family's vacation home, which contributed to it's exceptionally low mileage of only 2,650 miles. The coach work is by Schebera of Heilbronn, a coach building firm that had shops outside the Stuttgart area. The firm also made life boats for the German marine industry. The metal used for this Benz is of a special process used in manufacturing body armor in the 15th century. This ancient art of armor manufacturing used the process of "pinging, " and created a hardness at the bottom of the crater so a joist from a sword would be refracted. This is the only car known to exist with this type of armor finish. The Benz will debut at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance, Presented by Mercedes-Benz on April 18, 1998. It had its first restoration in 1962 and it has seen little use in its 84 years of existence.
