  • What are mailing lists?

A mailing list is a private or semi-private discussion area for special topics and discussions. The mailing list is a collection of subscribers who will receive every message sent to the list. Mailing lists can be used for announcements, discussions, class topics, and anything else that can be sent through E-Mail.

University Computing Services (UCS) currently supports mailing lists through the Majordomo software. This software is very flexable and easy to use, making it the ideal choice for the varied university enviornment. Some features include:

Closed or Open Mailing lists List post restrictions or moderated lists List archival/monthly digests

The general campus majordomo server can be reached by sending email to majordomo@lists.umbc.edu. If the message is empty or contains the word "help", a help file will be mailed back. Click here for the Help File. (Note: the subject lines of the email message are ignored.)

    Who can have a list?

Currently the only restriction on lists are that the list must be for a recognised campus organization or be directly related to a class.

How can I get a list?

Mail can be sent to majordomo-owner@lists.umbc.edu with the following information:

To make it easier, This Form can be filled out and submitted if your web browser will support forms.

If you are a list administrator, look at This Form for administrator information and help.

    What are the current lists?

To see the current lists active on lists.umbc.edu, simply mail majordomo@lists.umbc.edu with the word "lists", and it will return all currently served lists. Alternatively, the web interface for doing mailing list work (subscribing, unsubscribing, getting information, etc..) is located at this link.
