Umbc7 Status Information

Thursday - May 25, 1995 (Upgrade Day)

Umbc7 was upgraded to Irix 5.3 and an SGI Challenge S this evening, relatively smoothly. Users will notice more memory available (256 MB from 208 MB of main memory), and disk access may be a bit faster.
Irix 5.3 has enhanced C++ support, as well as many other upgrades over Irix 5.2 that speed it up and fix minor bugs.

Thursday - May 18, 1995 (Upgrade Planned)

Umbc7 will be doing down for hardware and software upgrades on Thursday, May 25 at 6:30 PM.

These upgrades will include:

Operating system upgrade from Irix 5.2 to Irix 5.3
Hardware upgrade from an SGI Crimson to an SGI Challenge S
Disk replacements (2 smaller disks with 1 larger disk)
Adding GNU Finger to the research setup
Misc. Software Upgrades and Patches

The Challenge S will be installed and worked on during the day to minimize downtime, so Umbc7 should only be down for several hours. (Note: Mail is not lost when the machine is down, it is queued on the sending host.)
