Hewlett-Packard Company, the leader in network systems for workgroups, today announced two new switches -- the AdvanceStack Switch 2000 and AdvanceStack Switch 200 -- designed to increase performance of new and existing interconnected workgroups while preserving customers' investments.
The HP AdvanceStack Switch 2000 offers flexibility and expandability for multiple 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps interfaces that has not been available for workgroups until now. Its support for multiple technologies makes it the industry's most comprehensive, modular and manageable segment switch for all workgroups. The HP AdvanceStack Switch 200 is a low-cost, low-end workgroup switch that provides growing offices with switched 10Mbps and dedicated 100Mbps to the desktop for power-users or power-workgroups.
"The AdvanceStack Switch 2000's modularity offers a future-proof switch solution in one box," said Gary McAnally, general manager of HP's Roseville (Calif.) Networks Division. "And the Switch 200 is a plug-and-forget solution -- something network managers have told us they want. Both switches strengthen HP's switch product family and provide simple, cost-effective ways for network managers to boost performance while preserving their investment in existing equipment."
The AdvanceStack Switch 2000 is a segment switch solution for workgroups. It gives customers the flexibility to mix and match 10Base-T and high-speed modules to customize their networks, depending on their configuration requirements. It allows customers to grow to a fully 100Mbps solution and provides numerous configuration options for network expansion. The AdvanceStack Switch 2000 will support all standard high-speed technologies: 100VG, FDDI, 100Base-T and ATM.
The AdvanceStack 2000 also supports an unparalleled level of network-management capability. Combined with OpenView network-management software, it delivers networkwide traffic monitoring, "top-talkers" data to help with switch placement and optimization and accurate network-topology mapping. These features are unmatched innovations in the management of switched networks.
The AdvanceStack Switch 2000 offers six universal slots, each of which accommodates modules of either four 10Base-T ports or two 100VG ports. Future modules are slated to include a two-port 100Base-T module supporting different media types, an FDDI module and an ATM module.
An AdvanceStack Switch 2000 Bundle is available to simplify the purchase process for customers. It also is a top-of-stack solution, offering eight 10Base-T ports, two 100VG ports and three expansion slots. This allows customers to configure the switch to meet specific workgroup needs.
In the AdvanceStack Switch 200, HP has combined switched 10Base-T ports with 100VG switching capability in one small box. It offers additional dedicated ports and bandwidth, with dedicated high-speed pipes for file-server access. Priced at $189 per port, HP's AdvanceStack Switch 200 provides industry-leading price and performance for small- or medium-size workgroups that are adding 100Mbps to the desktop for power-users. It offers a fixed configuration with 16 10Base-T switched ports and two 100VG dedicated ports.
HP offers switches that support 100VG and 100Base-T simultaneously. This enables customers to interconnect workgroups mixing 100VG and 100Base-T products, thereby protecting customers' investments.
For switch-to-switch or switch-to-server connections, 100Base-T is a suitable choice. However, the combination of switching technology with 100VG Demand Priority Protocol makes switched 100VG the optimal choice for emerging multimedia and time-sensitive applications.
For high-performance, shared environments, 100VG is HP's recommendation. 100VG's cabling, topology and traffic-capacity characteristics make it the optimal choice. 100VG supports multimedia and other time-sensitive applications without interference, making 100VG the preferred choice for running new and emerging applications.
The HP AdvanceStack Switch 200 and HP AdvanceStack Switch 2000 are expected to be available May 1, 1996, through HP's worldwide network of authorized computer dealers, resellers and distributors. HP switches and modules offer a three-year limited warranty.
