The Certificate Program in Gay and Lesbian Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee

The Certificate Program in Gay and Lesbian Studies at UWM

(web page still in construction stages, so please step carefully around the heavy machinery)

The Lesbian and Gay Studies Certificate at UWM is designed to create a rigorous and scholarly program of courses for students interested in the interdisciplinary study of sexual identity in past and present cultures. Although the Certificate Program is one of the first undergraduate programs of its kind in the Midwest, it is also part of an initiative in numerous universities and colleges across North America and Europe to formalize the study of gender and sexuality within a coherent and challenging curriculum. see the program requirements

What's the focus of Gay and Lesbian Studies?

Gay and Lesbian Studies investigates the historical and contemporary experiences of a population traditionally neglected in scholarship and courses. It explores issues of identity, community, representation, diversity, assimilation, and discrimination that are relevant in understanding many populations and important in understanding many disciplines. It naturally addresses but is by no means entirely devoted to questions about sexuality. Work in this innovative field includes material and methods from literary and cultural studies in English and foreign languages as well as Anthropology, Art, Economics, Film, Health Sciences, History, Music, Nursing, Political Science, Psychology, Sociology, and Social Welfare.
