About the Department of Linguistics

The Department offers a BA in linguistics, courses in foreign languages, and two ESL programs. It also provides the linguistics component in a number of graduate programs on campus. Here are the details.

Undergraduate Program

The Department has an undergraduate program in linguistics resulting in a BA. There are two majors to choose from: the standard major requires more courses to be taken in the department while the broadfield major allows more language-related courses to be taken in other departments. In addition, there is also a minor program.

Graduate Program

The Department is a member of the Master of Arts in Foreign Language and Literature (MAFLL) program, in which a degree concentration in linguistics is offered along with a number of foreign languages. In addition, the Department participates in several graduate programs on campus that involve a linguistics component. These are:

Foreign Language Courses

The Department teaches a number of foreign languages that are not represented by separate departments on campus. At present, we offer Arabic, Chinese, Irish, and Japanese, each on various levels.

English as a Second Language

Currently, we are running two ESL programs. One is a sequence of composition courses for university credit. The other is a non-credit comprehensive intensive program. For more information, please consult the ESL programs' own home page.
