Dialup SLIP/PPP Account

Our dialup SLIP and PPP accounts allow a user to dial in with SLIP or PPP software of his/her choice and directly access the Internet. We do make a rich set of public domain PPP and SLIP software available at no charge. SLIP and PPP have numerous advantages - too numerous to list here. But with SLIP or PPP, a machine can run multiple Internet applications at the same time using just one modem. With a user environment such as MS Windows or Macintosh, all the Internet applications fully use the graphical user interface capabilities of the user's computer. And with SLIP or PPP, a user can run Mosaic, the Internet browser (and read news and upload and download files all at the same time). And due to the way SLIP and PPP works, users can open multiple windows to their shell account at the same time, and can even run X Windows applications.

Additionally, our SLIP and PPP account users can name their machines and their machines get a permanently assigned IP address. For a small additional charge, we will register a personal domain for the user. (http://www.your_name.com). Check here for domain availability.

* This fee is charged for each domain registration. Typically, this is a one-time charge.

WWWDirect! Service

Our WWWDirect! service allows our web server to act as your http/WWW site. A custom domain registration is required to take advantage of this feature, though. With WWWDirect and your custom domain (mycompany.com for example), users anywhere on the Internet can access your home page as: http://www.mycompany.com. Without WWWDirect your home page would be: http://www.best.com/~yourlogin

Custom Domain Name Registration

We will register a custom domain name and provide domain name service for that name. The name is chosen by the customer, but must be unique on the Internet. An example of a custom domain would be mycompany.com. Custom domain names provide a professional or corporate look to your e-mail address. For example, you can get e-mail addressed to user@mycompany.com instead of user@best.com (the default for those without custom domain names). Additionally, each custom domain name registration also includes our WWWDirect! service. * Note: we can also move an existing domain name to our service.

Telnet-Only Shell Account

For our customers who already have Internet access but wish to take advantage of our custom domain name registration and WWWDirect! service, we provide this type of account. This account is also useful if you already have Internet access through your job. You would access the Internet through a different provider and access the Best Servers through telnet or ftp.

Our Unix Servers feature the latest Unix applications for accessing the Internet. We also feature programming tools and other useful Unix utilities for wordprocessing, etc. You can even run X-windows applications on our shell machine to your X server across the Internet.
