The Illinois Mathematics and Science Academy (IMSA) is the nation's only three year, residential public high school for students talented in the fields of science and mathematics. It is also the state of Illinois' research and development laboratory for K-12 mathematics and science education. The Academy's mission is two-fold:
IMSA opened in 1986 and graduated its first class in 1989. Under the Aegis of the Illinois Board of Higher Education, the Academy student enrollment was 650 students in 1991-92. Tuition and most room and board expenses are provided through state support.
