HOT ISOSTATIC PRESS - Model QIH-3 (Manufacturer - ABB Autoclave)
This is a high temperature, high pressure furnace capable of temperatures as
high as 2000 degrees Centigrade in a graphite furnace, with pneumatic pressures
reaching 27 KPSI. Containing samples in a specially prepared cans(compatible
with the furnace, sample and atmosphere) allows these samples to be compressed
to very high densities. The working space inside the chamber is approximately
2.5 inches in diameter by 5 inches long.
A special furnace is available which has oxygen atmosphere capabilities, but
the maximum temperature capabilities will be lowered to at least 1400 degrees
Centigrade. Pressure capabilities will remain at 27 KPSI. There are special
charges for setting up this furnace in addition to higher operating charges.
There are special considerations which must be adhered to when using this
furnace.
VACUUM HOT PRESS SINTERING FURNACE Series 3600
Model 2330-2-1-2300
(Manufacturer - GCA Corp. Vacuum Industries Division)
This high temperature, high pressure furnace has temperature capabilities of
2300 degrees Centigrade and pressure capabilities of 5 KPSI. NOTE: The
lower pressure limits on the HOT PRESS are determined by the strength of the
die materials (namely graphite) not the furnace capabilities. This
furnace uses hydraulic pressure in lieu of pneumatic pressure for compressing
samples. The opposing hydraulic rams transmit pressure against graphite
punches which are contained inside an appropriate die with the sample in
between the punches. This contains the sample and shapes it to the
configuration of the die being used while at pressure and temperature. Die
sizes are available (3", 2", 1", & 2" square
) for rent at $50 per run.
We have used dies as small as 3/4" square, but the square dies require special
construction, and pressure on the smaller dies become harder to control with
consistency. With properly designed and constructed dies hot ejection of the
sample is possible. (Advantages? Faster cooling of the sample and possibly
longer die life.)
SIGN UP PROCEDURE:
Contact Douglas A. Jeffers at:
Room 200 ESB - Phone 244-0110
Use of this equipment is on a first served basis. Normal hours of operation
are between 8:00 A.M. and 5:00 P.M.
CHARGES:
A rate of $50/hr. (plus a $50 die rental fee if needed) is charged, which is to
include all preparation such as programming the furnace controller, loading and
unloading the furnace and other miscellaneous things which could come about
through the course of the run. These prices are for the Graphite furnaces in
both the Hot Press & the Hot Isostatic Press.
We also have an Oxygen furnace for the Hip unit. The charges are $100/hr plus
charges for the change over to the Oxygen furnace.
Potential users of the HOT PRESS FACILITY should give consideration to the
possible need for the construction of any special devices which may not
normally be used in the average run or supplied by the HOT PRESS FACILITY.
Examples: Graphite crucibles (special sizes we don't have), and compatible
metal cans for the Hit Unit (Hot Isostatic Press). For the Hot Press, graphite
spacers and special dies that the facility doesn't have available for rent.
