LEAP


A Landcare and Environmental Action Program (LEAP), is a training program for unemployed young people aged 15-20 funded federally by the Department of Employment, Education and Training (DEET). In this LEAP project participants will electronically post information and develop a data base on the Internet featuring environmental and conservation issues.

The Municipal Conservation Association is the sponsoring organisation. LEAP offers a combination of formal training and practical experience to participants over a 26 week period. Work is carried out in the areas of Conservation, Landcare, Environment and Cultural Heritage with direct benefit to the community.

PROJECT


This project promotes sustainable development through computer journalism. It uses the exciting and growing medium of information technology in the form of global communications (especially the Internet) to inform and educate the community, about the latest innovative environmental programs. The project is designed to raise awareness in the community about environmental and cultural heritage issues and initiatives.

SUMMARY

Project: Internet Computer Journalism - Articles and a magazine about local government environmental initiatives and issues published digitally on the Internet.
Duration: May 6th to November 1st 1966 (26 weeks)

DUTIES:


1. To coordinate project training for a group of 15 unemployed young people, aged 15 - 20, on a daily basis, over a 26 week period.

2. To ensure that the 15 participants are adequately supervised at all times, while they are training.

3. To make an initial assessment of the young people's skills, and to develop an individual skills development plan in conjunction with each young person

4. To regularly meet with each particiapnt, to ensure that progress to the skills development plan is being achieved.

5. To maintain detailed, accurate and confidential records on each young person, that will reflect their particiaption and progress while they are training.

6. To meet regularly with the Project Manager and Steering Committee in odrer to monitor the progress of the project

7. to deliver the Certificate of General Education for Adults in Communications, Reading and Writing.

8. To assist participants in Career Planning and Job Searching.

9. Other duties as required.

KEY SELECTION CRITERIA :


The training Coordinator/Supervisor is required to have :-

- the ability to relate well to young people and have a comprehensive understanding of the issues affecting young people today

- some experience in working with young people

- experience in the delivery of communications, journalism and/or computer training.

- an understanding of the media, research, journalism or public relations either via formal qualifications or practical experience.

- an awareness of landcare, environmental, conservation and cultural heritage issues.

- the ability to manage projects and teams, including administrative, supervisory and co-ordinating skills.

- computer literacy, experience using the Internet would be highly regarded.

OTHER RELEVANT SKILLS :


1. Project evaluation skilss

2. The ability to work effectively both in a team environment and independantly.

3. Ability to prepare reports.

CONDITONS OF EMPLOYMENT:


HOURS 35 hours per week RATE PER HOUR $20
TERM 28 weeks (fixed contract position)

This position is subject to funding.

The successful applicatnt will be employed by the Municipal Conservation Association and will begin work on Wednesday the 24 th April and will be involved in the selection process of the young people applying for the LEAP course. The LEAP Project is to commence Monday 6th May 1996.
