This page tries to provide an overview of what the World Wide Web is, and what the Sterrewacht WWW server is. For local users, there are also sections about setting up your own home page and other frequently asked questions.

The World Wide Web - general

The World Wide Web. (or WWW or W3, or simply the Web) is a way to make information available on the Internet in an easy to use way.

The WWW uses HTML (= HyperText Markup Language ) as the language of its documents, and it uses HTTP (= HyperText Transfer Protocol) as the underlying protocol to transfer these pages. However, a user doesn't have to know about HTTP and HTML in order to access documents on the Web, and only limited knowledge is needed to create your first personal page (see below for local users).

The Sterrewacht WWW server

This document is served to you from one of the computers of Leiden Observatory at the University of Leiden, The Netherlands.

There is a backup server, called www2.strw.leidenuniv.nl that serves this same information.

Personal WWW pages for local users

For local users, here is some help on how to set up your own presentation, provided you have your home directory known to www.strw.leidenuniv.nl (users in the rest of the world should contact the person who maintains the www pages at their institute).

A list of people who already have such a page can be found here.

WWW software

WWW browsers (client software)

At Leiden Observatory, 3 WWW browsers are in general use :

WWW daemon (server software)

Both our WWW servers use the CERN httpd 3.0 software. Those who need it can find the configuration files in /strw0/www .
