New for 1995, Volvo offers the additional side impact protection of the side impact air bag. This revolutionary and patented safety feature deploys in the event of certain side impacts. In deploying, the side impact air bag is designed to act as a barrier between the seat occupant and the door. As an additional benefit, the air bag is designed to reduce the potential for injury by helping to shield the seat occupant from the B-pillar, door and side window. Mounting the side impact air bag in the seat back locates the bag in the best position relative to the seat occupant. The side impact air bag comes standard on the 850 Turbo and is an option on all other 850 models.
Three-point seat belts with head restraints are standard for all five seating positions including the center rear. Front seat belts offer pyrotechnic pretensioners that are designed to tighten the seat belt in the event of certain frontal impacts.
Driver and front passenger air bags (SRS) are designed to deploy in milliseconds to help dissipate the energy of an individual's forward motion.
