• 5-speed manual transmission with synchromesh on all speeds and reverse; Final drive ration: 4.0 (Not available with Turbo except Canada)
• 4-speed microprocessor controlled automatic with lock-up torque converter and selectable shift modes (Economy/Sport/Winter); Final Drive Ration: 2.74 (2.54 with Turbo)

A choice of transmissions includes Volvo's patented electronically controlled 4-speed automatic. Unique for its compact design and performance capability, the automatic features three driver select modes - S for sport, E for economy and W for wet or winter slippery conditions. A 5-speed manual transmission with quick positive shift action is available on all 850 models except the Turbo. For increased ease of maintenance, the 5-speed manual utilizes a synthetic lubricant that never needs changing.
