Construction
Most automobile seats are comfortable the first time they're used.
Volvo's are designed to be just as comfortable years later. Helical
springs stretch for comfort, without sacrificing support - and help to
minimize bounce when the car passes over a bump in the road. Strong,
flexible wires called pullmaflex help Volvo seat cushions hold their
shape, comfort, and support over them. And reinforced, cold-formed
polyurethane seat cushions are mounted over the seat framework for
firm, comfortable support. For additional passenger safety, Volvos
are built with anti-submarining devices on both front and rear seats
of 900-series and 850 models. In the strong momentum forces generated
by a collision, anti-submarining devices form a rigid support at the
front edge of the seat. This support resists the tendency of a
passenger's body to depress the seat cushion and slide downward
beneath the seat belt.
Features
Back tension is one of the major factors contributing to driver fatigue. Volvo led the way in developing a lumbar support mechanism that can be easily adjusted from firm to soft by turning a convenient knob to tighten or loosen the pullmaflex wires supporting the lumbar plate. Among other special features of Volvo seats are head restraints integrated into the front and rear seats, and a retractable rear center head restraint. Electrically heated front seats are available as an option. Heating elements and backrest can be switched on to warm the seat when the interior temperature drops below
50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 Celsius).
Power Seat
On Volvo 900-series and 850 models, the driver's seat features power
adjustment - and has a memory function that automatically stores the position settings for up to three individual drivers.
Rear Seat Child Cushion
The rear seat on 900 and 850 Series wagons includes a built-in child booster cushion* in the center, that folds down when needed. The rear center seat position also has a three-point seat belt.
Upholstery
One of the most immediate impressions any car will make is created by the appearance of its upholstery. What you see is important - but what you get is essential. Depending on the model, Volvo seats are upholstered in fine-grain leather, velour, or plush cloth. Strong polyester foam backing adds to the durability.
