SIDE IMPACT PROTECTION SYSTEM: The Volvo 850
The Volvo 850 incorporates additional Side Impact Protection System
features. The B-pillars between the doors, the roof arches, steel
profiles in the floor, and additional floor members under the front
and rear seats are extremely strong. In the base of the front seats,
lateral tubes connect the side B-pillars to a "crash" floor plan
between the seats; this box helps to absorb side-impact collision
energy and redirect it to the floor plan and across to the opposite
B-pillar. The lateral tubes are also connected to the seats
themselves, so the seats move with the tubes toward the center of the
car and away from the point of impact. The door sills are raised to
distribute side impact evenly into the lateral tubes. And instead of
tubular bars in doors, the door members have a stamped profile for
extra rigidity.
