Versatility
Volvo 900 series sedans are designed with a pass-through in the rear seat that allows long objects, like fishing poles or skis, to project from the trunk into the passenger compartment. The 900 series wagon, 850 sedan and the 850 Sportswagon add a split rear seat that allows you to accommodate long objects and still retain rear passenger space. The 850 also includes a front passenger seatback that folds forward to give you an unbroken straight-line storage capacity that stretches approximately 10 feet from the dashboard to the rear of the vehicle. All Volvo wagons are available with an optional rear-facing auxiliary seat that accommodates two children (total maximum weight: 176 lbs.)
Trunk Capacity
Inside the trunk of any Volvo sedan, all the space is usable - not compromised by low overhead or humped floor. Suitcases can be easily loaded over the low liftover and once inside, can stand vertically so more suitcases can be accommodated. The trunk capacity of the 900 series sedans is 16.6 cu. ft.; the 850 has a capacity of 14.7 cu.ft.
Entry/Exit
Getting in and out of a Volvo, as well as loading and unloading cargo, is remarkably easy. Both front and rear doors of most models open to an angle of nearly 80 degrees, and the front and rear seats are at a comfortable height from the ground; you can sit down and stand up again almost as gently as you would in a chair. Loading suitcases and bags in and out of the trunk is easier because of the low liftover height. Loading the rear cargo bay of a Volvo wagon is also particularly convenient: the strong but lightweight aluminum tailgate opens easily with one hand, and its nearly square shape allows you to load bulky objects, like furniture pieces, whose profiles might prevent them from entering smaller round-cornered openings. The tailgate can be opened from the inside - but provides a child safety lock to help prevent
accidental opening.
