Demon
Leased Line Connections to the Internet

Demon's Leased Line Service

Put your entire network of computers on the Internet using a Leased line connection (ranging from 64K to 2M), either direct to our London Network Operations Centre or one of our PoPs, including full, unlimited use of our UK and International bandwidth.

This page includes details on:

Our Complete Connectivity Solution

We offer a complete Internet solution for your existing network, which includes an ACC Danube Router, Ethernet transceiver and BT installation costs. Unlike a standard dial-up (modem) connection, once your line is installed and running, there are no online, volume or usage charges. After the initial set up fee, you only pay the fixed annual or monthly charge which includes:

If you buy a router from us, we will configure the router before despatch according to your specifications, providing a "Plug and Play" solution.

Domain Name Registration

You may use an existing domain or we can allocate a new one for you. If you wish to use an existing domain, we will arrange delegation to the relevant name servers for your use. If you wish to set up a new domain, we can deal with the administration on your behalf. A domain name can be of any (reasonable) length and a general guide is that it should reflect the company name or services, and is generally part of the hierachy listed below. For example, Demon's domain name is demon.co.uk which is part of the ".co.uk" hierachy. Very short names (3 or less characters) are normally only registered in exceptional circumstances.

Standard Internet domains include:

Domain Name Services (DNS)

Your domain name needs to be translated into a machine understandable format (IP numbers), so that other machines on the Internet can fully communicate with your network. To do this you will need to use domain name services.

Usenet News

Usenet is the set of machines that exchange articles tagged with one or more universally recognised labels, called newsgroups. The articles consist of discussions and files on a vast array of topics. It is the largest distributed bulletin board with an estimated 20,000,000 readers at 80,000 sites world-wide.

We collect a full range of newsgroups. We have a policy of running an open, free, news service which holds up to 28 days worth of news and a public news posting service whereby news messages may be posted via email.

We have software and documentation on our FTP server for a variety of platforms, and can advise on choosing and implementing appropriate Usenet software. You can choose to read your news interactively (on-line) or locally (off-line). You are free to create your own news groups, and build your own local news base.

Support

Support for our leased line customers is available during the working day via a special ex-directory number, which will give you direct access to senior technical staff. There is also a priority support mailbox, llsupport@demon.net, dedicated to our leased line customers.

We have an emergency pager which is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, for urgent support to leased line customers only. You will be given a special code so that you may page us at anytime and expect a technician to contact you. Our senior technicians carry pagers at all times to ensure a rapid response.

If you require, we can run automatic monitoring software which monitors the status of your leased line 24 hours a day, at no extra charge. In the unlikely event of any problems, this will automatically page senior technicians ensuring a rapid response.
