Contrapuntal Swirl.
Steve Holtzman's series
of distorted guitar sounds was inspired by moons, but not by the
familiar, romantic moon we know. His deceptive sound-miniatures
describe a journey
outward from the surface of Jupiter.
Shugli Shugli Song.
The Dhol Blasters rock
the Bhangra scene in Britain, a focal point of the thriving
Anglo-Indian youth culture. The physically impressive Nariner
S. Winnie is "visibly the largest and biggest Dhol player in the
country." We've captured a small fraction of his jam with fellow Dhol
master Gurcharan Mall.
Galura.
From a work by Indonesian composer Nano S. that appears on Asmat
Dream, a compilation of new music from Indonesia. It was composed
to demonstrate that an instrumental composition can touch as broad a
range of emotion ("galura") as does Sundanese singing.
L'Anthracite,
La Femme Des Uns Sous Le
Corps Des Autres. Serge Gainsbourg defined
cool for generations of French Svengali wannabes. In these songs from
his early years, we can practically smell the black smoke from his
cigarette, held with a twisted poise that sent shivers down a nation's
spine.
Jing Jing.
Okinawan
Shoukichi Kina takes a
swipe at a traditional song whose name means "firefly." Featuring Ry
Cooder on slide guitar.
Carpet Fuzz.
The "Interstellar funk
warriors" of Astro
Fuzz take us on a pounding journey featuring Intergalactic DJ
Slappy Moe.
Space Prophet Dogon.
Where does the music of the Sun City
Girls come from? A Peruvian valley, a Burmese village, or a dusty
bar on an Arizona highway, circa 1957.
