System Maintenance Onyx Deskside (T4-OnxMaint)
This System Maintenance Onyx Deskside course teaches
field engineers and service personnel how to perform all
maintenance on Silicon Graphics' CHALLENGE/Onyx Workstations.
Utilizing the RealityEngine2 graphics subsystems,
through a combination of lectures and labs, students will learn
to install, configure, troubleshoot, and verify the proper operation of
the workstation. During the labs, malfunctions are introduced into the
systems so students can get hands on experience using the various
diagnostics for troubleshooting.
Topics
This course covers these topics:
- Hardware Overview
- Data flow (CPU/ RealityEngine2)
- Supporting System Documentation
- Troubleshooting the CPU subsystem
- Loading and Running Diagnostics
- Crash Recovery and Disk Rebuilding
- Troubleshooting the RealityEngine2 Graphics subsystem
- IRIX Boot Process
Objectives
Upon completion of this course, the student should be able to ...
- Trace the flow of data through the CPU and Graphics subsystems and correctly describe the purpose of each functional block
- Correctly identify all the jumper platforms where voltages can be margined, backplanes or logic boards configured, and I/O device addresses set
- Working alone, correctly run specific diagnostics that are designed to locate a single failing FRU (Field Replaceable Unit) or verify that the workstation is functioning correctly
- Working alone, isolate an induced failure to a single Field Replaceable Unit (FRU) within one hour of the failure
- Demonstrate that he/she has developed basic System Administration skills that will allow the student to gather required status information; monitor system activity; create system backup tapes; rebuild/restore system disk drives; install new software; format, partition, and create IRIX filesystems on a virgin disk drive; create a disk logical volume and set up interleaving (striping) across two disk drives. This will be done via instructor observation, and successful completion of several tests and lab projects that each student must perform
Prerequisites
This course is intended for ...
- Field or service engineers who are responsible for remedial
or preventive maintenance on CHALLENGE/Onyx workstations
- Field or service engineers who have experience with UNIX or
IRIX operations that traverse the filesystem, create, modify and
remove files, and edit text (vi text editor preferred)
- Those students with at least 6 months experience of
preventative maintenance on any workstation
And have attended ...
