Cosmo Compress(tm) Indigo(r) Family
Cosmo Compress(tm)

Full-Resolution, Full-Motion Video to Disk
The Cosmo Compress(tm) motion JPEG option card from Silicon Graphics(r)
provides full-resolution, full-motion, real-time video compression and
decompression for the Indigo(r) family of desktop workstations. Cosmo Compress
works with Indy Video(tm), Indigo2 Video(tm), or Galileo Video(tm), and
powerful software applications, to let you explore new horizons in video
production, digital video distribution, motion video analysis, and video-based
training.
Cosmo is an integral part of the Silicon Studio(tm) solution for film and
video production from Silicon Graphics. Silicon Studio integrates world-class
2D and 3D graphics, image processing, digital audio, and high-quality video
in a single environment. With Cosmo, you can tap the power of Silicon Studio
without sacrificing image size, frame rate, or storage capacity.
Real Time
Cosmo takes the waiting out of digital video. Now you can capture, play back,
and output full motion video to and from memory or disk in real time.
- 60 fields or 30 fields per second compression/decompression of
full-resolution NTSC video
- 50 fields or 25 fields per second compression/decompression of
full-resolution PAL video
- Single-frame compression/decompression
Freedom to Choose
Sometimes maximum image quality is your priority. At other times you must
minimize storage and transmission bandwidth requirements. Cosmo adjusts to
your needs with a wide range of compression ratios under complete software
control.
Cosmo lets you choose the size of images you want to compress as well.
- Full-size fields
- Half-size fields (filtered horizontally)
You also have a choice of data formats for maximum flexibility.
- 8-bit per component 4:2:2 YUV
- 24-bit RGB
With Indy Video, Indigo2 Video, or Galileo Video
Cosmo requires a video option card to provide real-time video input/output
capabilities. The two cards are linked by a dedicated digital video path,
ensuring the real-time passage of video data.
Using Cosmo and the video cards together enables the real-time capture of
video streams, and the output of full frame rate, full-resolution digital
movies to video. This eliminates time consuming frame-by-frame input/output,
and reduces the need for expensive frame-accurate VTRs.
Editing and Effects
The real-time compression and decompression of Cosmo enables a wide range of
powerful video solutions. These solutions include non-linear editing and
real-time playback from disk of special effects, composites, and animations.
JPEG is an ideal compression algorithm for these post-production processes
because it preserves individual video frames.
Digital MediaMail
Digital MediaMail(tm) and presentations can now incorporate full size, full
frame rate video clips and animation for maximum impact. These clips can
also be "printed" to video in real time for distribution to wider audiences.
Storage and Network Savings
Cosmo helps you get the most out of your storage capacity by reducing the
size of clips and images. This reduces the cost of necessary storage devices.
Cosmo also speeds video transmission by minimizing network traffic, helping
you get the most out of your network investment.
Digital Media Libraries
These tools provide complete control of the Cosmo compression capabilities
to software application developers.
- Compression ratios
- Data formats
- Capture, playback, and output destinations (memory, disk, graphics, raster
and video out)
- Zooming and anti-aliased decimation
- Digital movie recording, editing, and playback
